China Finish Second in 2018 Tri-Campus Games

UNNCGLOBAL 2018-07-09

The 2018 Tri Campus Games celebrated its 10th Anniversary at the University of Nottingham UK Campus this year.

Each year the Tri Campus Games brings together students from the three University of Nottingham campuses (UK, China and Malaysia) to compete against each other in a range of up to 20 specialist sports and campus-team challenges.

The games offer a genuine opportunity to develop ‘Friendship Through Sport,’ allowing sporting and educational exchanges in a friendly spirit of competition that only an event of this nature can engender. A cultural programme of visits and events runs in parallel with the Games.

Team China flew out 64 staff and students to represent against UK and Malaysia. The week started with an opening ceremony to open the games and then the action began. It wasn’t the best of starts on day one for Team China picking only three wins out of nine matches,  most notably Ulimate Frsibee team beating the UK convincingly 13-5, but after a good night’s sleep the fortunes changed in days two, three and four.

On day two Team China had 10 matches across eight sports ended the day in contention of regaining Tri-Campus Games title. China went on to win six out 10 matches, the most notable games where the men’s and women’s basketball matches which were the feature matches of the day. The women’s won 48-16 against Team Malaysia. The crowd were pumped up, supporting their teams and giving extra encouragement and it was Team Malaysia who got the first points on the board with a simple 2 pointer at the net, but it was Team China who responded next and went on to register 23 unanswered points with a true exhibition of basketball to win the match convincingly.

The second feature match was Team Malaysia against Team China, this was a much closer affair and Team Malaysia’s Xuan Ian Chu made an instant impact with some brilliant post moves early in the game to create chances but Team China were equally matched to the challenge. In particular, Albert provided significant pressure and creativity at point guard to open up opportunities.

Albert UNNC Basketball team player is studying at UNNC from Spain had this to say about his experience “Tri-Campus Games would not be the same without the people. I have met wonderful people from diverse cultural backgrounds that share the same passion I do for basketball. We played pick-up games, not to compete, but rather to have fun. We hanged out together, introducing ourselves to people from UK and Malaysia and show them the ‘true’ Chinese food experience. They had the experience to eat with chopsticks, sample a Chinese hotpot in the UK. Overall, we all had a great time, and we will definitely look back on this as one of our best experiences that university has offered.”

Team Malaysia slipped to a 16-point deficit in the 3rd quarter and sadly, for Malaysia there was no coming back from that. Team China was strong enough to secure back-to-back  basketball victories in the 2018 Tri Campus Games with a  40-53 win that put them back in contention for the title.

On the final day there were only six fixtures remaining, but everything to play for. Team China continued their dominance in the Basketball by beating  Malaysia in a repeat of the feature game at David Ross Sports Village and there was a draw in the Men’s Football as Team UK slipped to their second 2-2 draw of the games.

Team China, won all three of their fixtures, but in the end it was not to be after a fighting come back from day one. Team Malaysia took the title with 21 points, Team China finished in 2nd  place with 20 points and Team UK ended upon 19 points.

Sarah Humphreys Director of Sport & Physical Education said “The Tri-Campus Games is an amazing opportunity for our students to compete against the UK and Malaysian campuses in a week of sporting fixtures and cultural activities, embracing the global reach and diversity that the University of Nottingham has. The fact that there was only three points between all three campuses at the end of the week, shows how close the competition was this year and also how hard the students worked to win the trophy for their respective campus. Next year, Team China is setting the goal of winning back the trophy from Malaysia on their home soil!”

As well as opportunities for students, UNNC were able to send out 4PE/Sport Assistant staff to support the student athletes, this also served agreat opportunity to learn and network from our colleagues in the UK andMalaysia. Winnie Xu Team Manager for the trip said, “I have watched the athletes compete in high-spirited games, it has showed me what sportsmanship should look like. It is a great blessing to see students gain friendship, happiness and honor. I would like to thank all the athletes for their contribution, devotion and the honor they have showed for UNNC. Simply for me, the Tri Campus Games is not just a student sports meeting, it is an event, which combines cultural exchange, friendship and sport, It is a bridge linking the three campuses.”
